Does Mifepristone Use Affect Our Water?

While we all know that Mifepristone (the abortion pill) takes the life of a baby in the womb and can harm the mother, might this deadly pill present problems in another sphere? Voices across the country are now calling for an investigation into the contamination of our water from the pill and the medical waste resulting from the pill’s use. 

While an environmental assessment was done in 1996 before Mifeprex (the brand name for Mifepristone) was approved for use, no post-market studies have been done. The lack of studies is used by abortion proponents to support their claim that there are no concerns because if there were, evidence of pollution would have surfaced by now.¹ This is circular reasoning! If no studies are done, how can evidence of pollution be identified? Meanwhile, the use of Mifepristone has skyrocketed, and women who use it are typically at home, passing the aborted babies and placental remains into their toilets, flushing them into the wastewater systems.

These systems aren’t designed to handle such waste. Wastewater treatment systems cannot adequately process the fetal remains passed by women who use the pill past the gestational age recommended. Abortion facilities are required to dispose of these remains as medical waste, meaning they must be incinerated at licensed incineration facilities.² Additionally, consider the Mifepristone which enters the wastewater through excess pills that are flushed down the toilet or thrown away by those who change their minds or order more than they use (anything tossed in the trash and sent to a landfill eventually makes its way into the environment in some form). Pharmaceutical waste is required to be processed by licensed hazardous waste facilities.³ Yet nothing is being done to handle either the medical waste or the pharmaceutical waste generated by the wide availability of Mifepristone.

Is the growing, unregulated use of Mifepristone polluting our water and consequently threatening public safety?
