Does Mifepristone Use Affect Our Water?

While we all know that Mifepristone (the abortion pill) takes the life of a baby in the womb and can harm the mother, might this deadly pill present problems in another sphere? Voices across the country are now calling for an investigation into the contamination of our water from the pill and the medical waste resulting from the pill’s use. 

While an environmental assessment was done in 1996 before Mifeprex (the brand name for Mifepristone) was approved for use, no post-market studies have been done. The lack of studies is used by abortion proponents to support their claim that there are no concerns because if there were, evidence of pollution would have surfaced by now.¹ This is circular reasoning! If no studies are done, how can evidence of pollution be identified? Meanwhile, the use of Mifepristone has skyrocketed, and women who use it are typically at home, passing the aborted babies and placental remains into their toilets, flushing them into the wastewater systems.

These systems aren’t designed to handle such waste. Wastewater treatment systems cannot adequately process the fetal remains passed by women who use the pill past the gestational age recommended. Abortion facilities are required to dispose of these remains as medical waste, meaning they must be incinerated at licensed incineration facilities.² Additionally, consider the Mifepristone which enters the wastewater through excess pills that are flushed down the toilet or thrown away by those who change their minds or order more than they use (anything tossed in the trash and sent to a landfill eventually makes its way into the environment in some form). Pharmaceutical waste is required to be processed by licensed hazardous waste facilities.³ Yet nothing is being done to handle either the medical waste or the pharmaceutical waste generated by the wide availability of Mifepristone.

Is the growing, unregulated use of Mifepristone polluting our water and consequently threatening public safety?

Is Contraception a Blessing or a Bane?

In our contemporary culture, birth control is considered a necessary and viable means of preventing the intrusion of children into the life of a woman who doesn't desire a child. Some consider it so necessary that they insist it should be included in every insurance plan and paid for by the government.

Let’s think about birth control methods, their effectiveness, and their ethical implications. The technical term for birth control is a device tending or serving to prevent conception or impregnation. CONTRACEPTIVE Definition & Meaning | Dictionary.com (Accessed Sept 14, 2026) There are five major categories of contraceptives: barrier, natural, permanent surgical, hormonal, and emergency contraception.٭

Because the following methods do not involve fertilization of the egg, they are morally neutral. Barrier methods prevent pregnancy by keeping the sperm from reaching the egg. Natural methods include several options which are likewise calculated to prevent sperm contact with eggs. Finally, surgical methods which alter the male or female reproductive organs also prevent pregnancy. These three methods vary in effectiveness from 72% to 100%.

The remaining two methods of contraception are hormonal and emergency contraception. Hormonal birth control primarily aims to prevent ovulation but has a secondary action of causing the uterine lining to be unfavorable to the implantation of a fertilized egg, thus potentially destroying a tiny human life. Emergency contraception, used after unprotected sex, acts to kill a fertilized egg, thus terminating a life and a pregnancy. These methods are 93%-99% effective—at annihilating a living human being—rendering them morally reprehensible.

In Genesis 2:24 Moses commented on God's perspective concerning marriage, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (ESV). After creating mankind male and female, God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it” (Genesis 1:28 ESV). From these Scripture references, it is undeniable that God ordained a biological man and woman, joined together in marriage, to have children. This is his instruction regarding the bearing of children. Additionally, all throughout Scripture children are viewed as a blessing from God. While there may be times when a godly couple seeks to prevent pregnancy for legitimate reasons, in general God never intended for people to look for ways to avoid or destroy his blessings.

To rephrase the title of this Lifelines article: Are Children a Bane or a Blessing?
